Darlene Lucas joined the SGBCHC team over two years ago and is currently working as the Centre’s Clinical Assistant. In 2018, Darlene held a lead role in supporting the implementation of the Social Prescriptions (Rx) Pilot Program in this region. The Social Prescribing Program worked with volunteers to develop social and cultural programs that addressed isolation within our community. Our popular Hobbies & Craft group, spearheaded by Darlene, is a great example of one of the SGBCHC’s successful social prescribing programs. Participants who attended this weekly group socialized over coffee, connected with other members of our community and enjoyed the many crafts and hobbies that were supplied.
As the pandemic began to impact the daily routines of our community members, the SGBCHC was able to take the Social Prescribing Hobbies & Craft Group to an online format using ZOOM to ensure that the group members could continue to support each other during this challenging time.
With a compassionate and empathetic approach, Darlene has been facilitating this group every week throughout the summer months. We continue to receive positive feedback from participants about how much less isolated they feel as a result of the weekly sessions. This group enables participants to socialize, discuss current events, and showcase their crafts and hobbies as they complete them. It’s a great way for the group to stay connected and fosters a sense of inclusiveness.
Participants are welcome to attend at their leisure on Thursday afternoons from 1:30pm to 3:00pm from the comfort of their homes. To join the Social Rx Hobbies & Craft group, please contact Darlene Lucas at Darlene.lucas@sgbchc.ca or 705.422.1888 x 143. Everyone is welcome!
